A date picker to schedule posts in WordPress
On Sunday mornings I make some coffee, sit down at my computer, and choose 7 images to publish to my blog throughout the week. After I’ve chosen and edited the images I schedule them in WordPress to be published each morning at around 9:00am. I can then go about my week knowing that each day there […]

Eleven and six and twenty
Thanks to Jeremy for remarking how he forgot his blog’s 15th anniversary (congrats Jeremy!) it reminded me to check and, well, I missed my blog’s anniversary by nearly the same number of days as he did. On Saturday October 1 this blog, my personal blog on my own domain name but not my first ever personal blog, […]

Keeping houseplants alive
I’ve killed far more houseplants than I can count. And I regret every one too because I love having houseplants. Real ones. Plants with character. A variety. And, for whatever reason (mostly laziness), I’ve killed off a ton of them over the years. But recently I’ve been doing a much better job at keeping them […]

Exploring Conservation Island in Promised Land State Park
It takes me just over an hour get to Promised Land State Park. (See also, park map.) Because it isn’t too close to home I’ve only been to this park twice. Once two years ago to kayak and again just a few weeks ago with Jonathan Edwards to do a little UAV flying and hiking. We […]

Save your Faces before upgrading to macOS Sierra
I’ve been tweeting, and created a Moment, regarding the fact that Photos on macOS Sierra has gotten rid of the "Faces" feature in favor of a new "People" feature. This wipes out all of your hard work tagging people in photos. Personally this means I’ve lost hundreds of hours. But, you don’t have to. And it […]

What I saw this week #13: September 30, 2016
I’m resurrecting an old series of posts that I used to publish here called "What I saw this week". In this series I’d publish a single post per week with some of the things I came across that week that I thought were interesting. It allowed me to link to interesting things without posting too […]

Creating your own hiking checklist
Have you ever bolted out the door to go hiking (or kayaking, photographing, cycling, it doesn’t matter) and when you arrive at your location you realize you forgot something at home? Say, a camera battery or a water bottle? Here is a simple way to reduce the number of times this happens to you: make a checklist. […]

YouTube has replaced TV for me (and, how to use the Watch Later playlist)
I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube lately. More specifically, I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube on my TV lately. Here is how I do it but first, a bit of background on my personal YouTube habits. For the first few years of YouTube the only videos that I would see were the viral or […]

10MacApps over 10 years later
Ten and a half years ago I was asked by Zach Hale to jot down my 10 favorite Mac apps and then ask a few others to do the same. Wow, ten and a half years ago. Pre iPhone. Now, with the Mac seemingly a second-class citizen both in hardware upgrades and app popularity, now […]

Nominated for Tech Blog of the Year
NEPA BlogCon 2016 is fast approaching and with it comes this year’s nominations for Blog of the Year in several categories. Out of nowhere last night, as I was hiking the Dunmore Pine Barrens (again), my Twitter notifications were springing to life as I realized that my blog has been nominated in the Tech category. […]

Watching the Jaws anthology
For the sake of humanity, and because Netflix took the time, effort and expense of adding these movies to their library, I’ve watched Jaws, Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, and Jaws: The Revenge. Do you know how sometimes your memory of a thing can make that thing seem better than it really was? This seems to […]

A few updates to my site

Hiking every trail in Lackawanna State Park
For several weeks I’ve been slowly tracing my way through the trails found within the confines of Lackawanna State Park and I’m just about halfway through my goal of hiking every trail. The park boasts over 18-miles of hiking and 15-miles of multi-use trials (hiking, horseback riding, biking) giving me plenty of places to explore. Counting […]

Remy’s decade of blogging
Remy Sharp recently celebrated 10 years of blogging. What is he most happy with? More importantly, every single URL on my blog that’s ever been published still works, and even better than that (for me) is my archive showing off the decade of writing I’ve been producing over all this time. My blog archive is […]

Dan Rubin’s iPhone 7 Plus ring light portraits
Friend Dan Rubin took the new iPhone 7 Plus out for a test-drive using a ring light. On whether or not the iPhone 7 Plus is the best smartphone to get for jumping into photography: Is it the best place to start if you’re just trading up to a smartphone for photography? I don’t think […]

Disappearing apps and services
Alexei Baboulevitch (archagon) in a comment on Hacker News: These indie apps are often marketed as beautiful, wholesome alternatives to grimy corporate or open source software, but how could I possibly rely on these products for essential tasks like note-taking if they’re just going to disappear out from under me in a few years? The […]

Walked up to a young skater bro last evening and asked if I could shoot video of him — both in slow-mo and with the UAV — and he immediately thought it was a great idea. Just another "you don’t know unless you ask" lesson.
