Had an incredible day yesterday visiting the Berwick Brewing Company, O’Donnell Winery, and Three Dogs Vino. It was nice to visit some new-for-us places in our area. Worth the drive.

I usually don’t post to my blog on the weekends. But I want that Micro.blog 30-day pin.

Dean Allen
I did not know Dean Allen. But you couldn’t have been a blogger in the early 2000s without coming across, and admiring and swooning over, Textism – Dean’s blog. I was no exception. In fact, I was still subscribed to Textism’s RSS feed until I heard the news. Likely a 15 or so year old […]

An interview with Manton Reece of Micro.blog
I have fond memories of the very early days of WordPress (when it had just been forked from b2/cafelog), of Twitter, of Brightkite, of App.net, of Mastodon… just to name a few. The early days of any platform or so important to what they will become. They are the most fun to watch. The early […]

Microsoft Office now shares a common codebase
Erik Schwiebert: Mac Office 2016 version 16 is now live! For the first time in over 20 years, Office is again built out of one codebase for all platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android)! MSFT is dog fooding big time with this latest release of Mac Office. I’ve been enjoying my work within their frameworks and […]

Fred Wilson on owning your content
Fred Wilson: I would never outsource my content to some third party. I blog on my own domain using open source software (WordPress) that I run on a shared server that I can move if I want to. It is a bit of work to set this up but the benefits you get are enormous. […]

Nintendo Labo
Nintendo: Nintendo Labo combines the magic of Nintendo Switch with the fun of DIY creations. I don’t play any games. I know, I’m boring. But I soaked up countless nights and weekends in my early 20s playing first-person shooters and I can’t get any of that time back. So I choose not to play any […]

Brisk late-afternoon photowalk, Downtown Scranton, January 2018 I saw the sun hitting the tops of the buildings and quickly ran outside for a brisk photowalk.

Summa Scene, Downtown Scranton – January 2018 Saw this tag walking back in the snow to the office after a client meeting. Thought it ironic.

Wallace.dog
Local friend Jeremy Brown has a cute animated comic that he publishes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It is called Wallace.dog. If you follow him on Instagram you can see behind-the-scenes how much work it is — often starting long before sunrise. I urge you to check it out.

Seth Godin on Google’s Promotions Inbox
Seth Godin, in an open letter to Google: Imagine that your mailman takes all the magazines you subscribe to, mixes them in with the junk mail you never asked for, and dumps all of it in a second mailbox, one that you don’t see on your way into the house every day. And when you […]

Micro Monday – January 15, 2018: Scott McNulty
My Micro Monday recommendation this week is Scott McNulty. He’s blogging more, podcasting, sharing his reading reviews, and sharing his weight loss journey. Great inspiration on many levels.

Richard MacManus’s tech predictions
Richard MacManus attempts to predict some things for 2018: We’ll finally get a killer app for AR in 2018. Maybe hope springs eternal, but I’d love to see an AR app with real utility – not just a game like Pokemon Go. I suppose it matters how you define "killer app". For me a killer […]

Social media in 2018: Facebook – where we unwittingly share fake articles Snapchat – where we privately video chat w/ squeaky voices Twitter – where we retweet our dislike of "other people" Instagram 🎉 – where we share our best photos, work, motivations, recipes Wonder why IG is winning? 🤔

Android Excellence on Google Play
Kacey Fahey on the Android Developers Blog just sort of gave out some awards: Every day developers around the world are hard at work creating high quality apps and games on Android. Striving to deliver amazing experiences for an ever growing diverse user base, we’ve seen a significant increase in the level of polish and […]

An update via Android (audio)

Pathway, Westfield, NJ – January 2018
Pathway, Westfield, NJ – January 2018 Found this small pathway between buildings in Westfield that led from the storefronts to the housing beyond. On these cold winter days this is likely the quickest way to get to the nearby bakery or Five Guys for a burger.

Scott McNulty on making time to read
Scott McNulty gets asked about how he reads so many books every year. His answer? You just have to make time for it. You know that time you spend doing something other than reading for pleasure? If you spent that time reading instead, you’d read more. I get asked this same question about building apps, […]

Micro Monday – January 8, 2018: Mike Haynes
Micro.blog has a new thing where each Monday you recommend someone to follow and why. Here is Jean MacDonald, Community Manager at M.b: We are inaugurating Micro Monday January 8. Inspired by Follow Friday, we want to encourage helpful recommendations rather than lists of accounts to follow. We suggest you make just one recommendation per […]

Colin Walker’s tech predictions
Colin Walker answered the call. Interesting list. Here is just one: Mark Zuckerberg reveals he has political ambitions after all. Not wanting to be criticised he “does a Trump” and supposedly signs over all control of Facebook while making a run for the White House. I don’t think Zuckerberg will ever leave Facebook. Not even […]

Repost: Stephen Pieper re: Indieweb plugins
👉 Stephen Pieper: I went a bit crazy with Indieweb plugins and services to begin with. The fervour of the new follower. I’m cutting out the stuff I don’t need now or the the things that just don’t work the way I want them to. Manual seems best for some things.

Noah Read’s tech predictions
Prompted somewhat by my technology prediction time capsule, Noah Read takes a stab at what he thinks we’ll see (or, won’t see) in 2018. He has some interesting takes. Most of which I agree with. I do not think I agree with this take, though: AR will be a passing craze, while at the same […]

The new Technorati
Glenn Rice: My first impression is that micro.blog could be the new, simpler Technorati for the rising IndieWeb tide – a nice centralised way for people to discover each other’s posts and sites without losing the decentralised, own-your-data nature of the indieweb. I have very fond memories of Technorati so I do not mind this comparison. Technorati […]

Today I did some maintenance on my domain name, registrar, hosting provider, and file structure for my site. I still have a few things I’d like to do in preparation for my personal blogging goals in 2018. I think it will be a banner blogging year for me.

Choosing without deciding
Seth Godin: We can save a lot of time and effort by making our meaningless choices effortless. Pick the first one, or the one in alphabetical order or flip a coin. Merely have a rule and make the choice. This point made by a recent post by the inimitable Seth Godin strikes the same chord […]

SPARK Talks at the NEPA Tech meet up in December 2017
SPARK Talks are, by definition, Short, Provocative, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Knowledgeable talks that are loosely timed, on a specific topic (more or less), and allow many presentations to be given at an event. I had never heard of them prior to this month’s NEPA Tech meet up organized by John George. SPARK Talks remind me of Lightning Talks or Ignite. […]

I think I will get used to this Pixel 2 XL camera. Very satisfied.

After a little more than a day with Android the thing I miss most is Tweetbot. The Twitter apps are terrible. I now understand why many people don’t see the value of a microblogging social network. Tweetbot is likely the only reason I can still use Twitter.
-
After over 10 years on iOS I’ve switched to Android on the Pixel 2 XL. So far an excellent experience.
-
Seriously considering a move to the Pixel. But what would I do with my Apple Watch? And how does one live without Tweetbot?

Andrew Canion’s podcast addiction
Andrew Canion: I listen to a lot of podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for more than 10 years, way before they were mainstream. I used to load podcasts onto my work-supplied IBM ThinkPad and drive to work with it open on the passenger seat, playing podcasts. This was before I owned an iPod, let […]

Repost: Cabel Sasser re: Apple update caching
👉 Cabel Sasser on Twitter: macOS 10.13 Tip: have lots of iOS / Mac devices in your house? And a Mac that’s usually on? Turn on "Content Caching" in Sharing prefs, and updates will be downloaded to all your devices from your Mac, saving time and bandwidth. LINK

Universal Apple apps
Mark Gurman, for Bloomberg: Starting as early as next year, software developers will be able to design a single application that works with a touchscreen or mouse and trackpad depending on whether it’s running on the iPhone and iPad operating system or on Mac hardware, according to people familiar with the matter. Remember the many times […]

I’m considering the reprising of my "best of the year lists" for this year. Just need to find the time. Here are the lists from 2008 and 2009.

Micro.blog is now public
Manton Reece: Micro.blog is now available to anyone. There’s a limit of 100 new sign-ups each day, so that we can better respond to feedback as the community grows. I’ve been using Micro.blog on the web, Mac, and iOS for a few months and the community there has been great. In fact, the vast majority […]

An original iPhone shot – November 2009
An original iPhone shot – November 2009 The short story behind this photo that I’ve recently stumbled across is that Eliza and I were on a cruise in late-2009. I took my iPhone and she was still lugging around her DSLR. We both snapped a photo at the same time. But, I had never thought […]
