Notes

Short posts, links, photos, and working notes.

Quick updates, links, reposts, photos, and small things I learn while working.

Update (October 2026): Unmark’s hosted service no longer accepts new sign-ups. For my current bookmarking app, see Rinku, its free, open source, local-first successor.

Github user ElgranLoky set up a simple Docker container to run Unmark locally. I use Docker to run it locally as well for development (albeit with a slightly more complex set up). If you haven’t tried Unmark yet, you can run it locally for free, use it for free at unmark.it, or chip in a few bucks per year to help support development.

We tried a few test pizzas on Tuesday evening in the new Roccbox. Great pizza oven. Very easy to use. Delicious. Now we’re onto making our own dough. Will share pizza resources in future post.

More and more bloggers that I subscribe to are doing link posts similar to my What I saw series and I love it. It is a really quick way to get a ton of interesting things to look at with a bit of commentary. I wish everyone did it.

Anyone with salt pool experience can help me with an algae bloom issue? What is the best method to remove and defend?

Twice in the last two months I’ve set up new Calendly accounts only to have their trial period end and the URLs fail without them notifying me. Not cool.

I have a Logitech MX Master 2S and periodically the scroll-wheel stops working on macOS. If I restart the computer it works again. Anyone else have this problem? What is this, Windows 98?

Built 3 garden beds this weekend. We were able to move what we started in the mini-greenhouse into the ground. So far, this is what we have going.

Tomatoes – 3 types
Carrots
Squash
Green and Red peppers
Cabbage
Lettuce
Red onion
White onion
Green beans
Bunch of herbs
Asparagus
Strawberries
Garlic
Raspberries

Oh, and 2 pear trees. We’re hoping to add just a few more veggies for this year and reassess our needs next year.

It used to be you went to trailers.apple.com to see what movies were coming soon. These days I have no idea what movies are available on which service. The TV app (not to be confused with Apple TV) helps but not enough.

I wish I controlled Micro.blog Discover.

Any morning I’m able to break out the 645 is a good morning.

Most of the time I have no issues with OneDrive. It is just in the background working. But now and then I do wish it didn’t fail so silently. I’d much rather it pop up and yell that it isn’t working properly.

Everyone’s Twitter bio should probably have the word investor in it by now. The word’s meaning (and perhaps weight) have changed a lot over the last 10 years.

Email: Are you the right person to contact about posting to your website?

Me: You’d be better off contacting Albert Einstein.

Thanks to everyone that has purchased or donated to my projects lately. I have development chemicals, paper, and a viewfinder I need to buy soon so these donations help.

Today there are updates for both Red Oak and Cypress for Micro.blog! Red Oak gets the ability to choose different colors and Cypress gets Dark Mode! Both options available in config.json. These updates should roll out today.

For a few brief moments this weekend I was able to pull out my two favorite pieces of kit. I’m really hoping I can take a lot more photos on film over the next few months as things open up a little.

What Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram did to blogging — Spotify and Apple Podcasts are attempting to do to Podcasts.

Make it dead simple but put it in a silo and position themselves between the creator from the customer.

Red Oak for WordPress is turning out pretty great. Looking forward to getting it out there next week. Red Oak for Micro.blog will be getting bug fixes soon too. Did you know it was already live?

They should try putting an M1 chip in Apple Music.

I made progress on Red Oak for WordPress. Looking like release next week. On Micro.blog it should appear in the Design settings very soon for people to test out. Please report any issues you have. I’m sure there will be some.

Thanks to everyone that sent in bugs with Red Oak for Micro.blog. I’ve pushed several updates that address all of the known bugs for now. I’m sure there will be more but may not be able to fully test it until people install it.

I’m working on a second theme for both Micro.blog and WordPress. This time, it will come to Micro.blog members first (free for members) and then to WordPress for an introductory price. The M.b version is almost ready for beta testing.

Just released the sixth major build of Cypress for WordPress. It includes an image count on portfolio items (see homepage). This is something I missed from my previous theme. It is optional!

The tooltips in Apple’s emoji picker on macOS are infuriating. (If I’m complaining about something this trivial and fatuous, my life must be amazing today. And it is!)
