Dingle Bay, Loch Caragh, Co. Kerry, Ireland – October 2011
Dingle Bay, Loch Caragh, Co. Kerry, Ireland – October 2011 Had the opportunity to finally edit these photos from our trip to Ireland 9 years ago. No drones then, all feet.

There hasn’t been a new episode of the podcast in a little while. This is because the subject I’m attempting to photograph is not cooperating with my schedule. But more are coming!

Looks like my site’s stats plugin stopped working sometime at the end of last month. I’m debating my need to even have it. I do like to know if my site was mentioned or linked to though.

Looking back on Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm
On the cusp of the release of Star Wars Episode IX, I revisited a post I wrote in 2012 regarding Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm from George Lucas. In it I postulated that Lucasfilm was worth far more than the $4B purchase price but that Lucas structured the deal to make up for that over the […]

Vincent Laforet reviews the new Mac Pro
Vincent Laforet: This was the closest I’ve come to feel to seeing my digital work look like Color Slide film – think Fujichrome, Kodachrome and Cibachrome prints. At times, it felt like I was seeing my footage for the first time. It sounds trite I’m sure – but it’s true. This bit was specifically about […]

I want any size screen, any time, any where
Andy Baio in an interview on Uses This: I’ve worn glasses for my entire life, so my personal dream setup would be replacing my laptop, monitor, and phone all at once by replacing my prescription lenses with augmented-reality glasses that annotate the world around me without blocking it out entirely. I do not wear glasses […]

Heron in the rain – November 2019
Heron in the rain – November 2019 It was getting dark and had begun to rain so I was wrapping up a photowalk and as I’m sitting in my car texting Eliza this heron lands just outside my car window. I managed to get a few snaps in before he disappeared into the brush.

Recent Snowbirds – Fall 2019
Recent Snowbirds – Fall 2019 Trudging through the first snows of the season to find small bird havens has been a delight. I managed to find a pile of grass clippings that a nearby grounds-keeper tries to hide away behind some evergreens – the birds love to pick through the pile for insects and seeds.

Texting while driving
Bloomberg: The data support the generally-accepted wisdom that despite laws, penalties and reminders of the hazards of cell phone distractions while behind the wheel, drivers continue to put themselves and others on America’s roads in grave danger. Do the world a favor. Grab a nearby friend or family member and show them how to turn […]

Finished reading Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A fast-paced read. Would make a great fun movie.

I almost lost the majority of today’s work. Walked away for a bit. Came back and restored it in two clicks. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this over my career. Especially with programming challenges. Walking away is a pro tip.

Speaking of podcasts, I’m really enjoying BirdNote – a very short daily podcast about birds full of great bird sounds.

After further study, what I photographed was an American Mink and not a Fisher. I’ll have to provide an update.

Adrian (aows) on Photography
Adrian (aows): An imperfect composition, a rather dark or bright image, and less than ideal conditions could be ingredients for a great image. His Instagram account is one of my favorites. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea at first glance, but if you read his FAQ you’ll see what his goal is for […]

How to enjoy a long winter
Jason Kottke: I decided that because I live in Vermont, there is nothing I can do about it being winter, so it was unhelpful for me to be upset about it. I stopped complaining about it getting cold and dark, I stopped dreading the arrival of snow. I told myself that I just wasn’t going […]

Two recent modern frustrations: Open an app I had open previously, it opens to its default view rather than where I was. Hit the back button in my browser, the page is no longer the same as it was when I was there. This is a regression of how things used to be.

An update on how to listen to my podcast Photowalking with Colin
The first few episodes of my new photography podcast have been a learning experience for me. How should I record, edit, distribute these episodes? With each episode I’ve been able to improve that process and make some decisions along the way. Me, on location While I’m hoping to continue to improve the audio quality, the […]

Richard Bernabe on Twitter
Richard Bernabe, in an otherwise good interview on his photography, says this about Twitter: I like Twitter, even if it does represent both the best and worst the Internet has to offer. If you’re there to argue politics with other humans, it most certainly is a dystopian hellscape that will make your life a dark, […]

To someone that may not know the context, “Google Open Sources Cardboard” must be a head-scratching headline.

Following my watching of the Elsa Dorfman doc, I watched Seeing Daylight, which is about Dorothy Bohm. So much inspiration to be found in bodies of work rather than singular images.

Watched The B-Side, Errol Morris’ doc about Elsa Dorfman and her excellent Polaroid portraits on Netflix. Be sure to see her website.

CaptionBot
Microsoft: CaptionBot.ai is powered by machine learning technology that identifies and captions your photos. When you upload a photo, it is sent to Microsoft for image analysis to return a caption. We won’t store, publish, or let other people use your images. I uploaded a few images. It works pretty well. I’m unsure of this […]

.new
Google: With .new, you can help people take action faster. We hope to see .new shortcuts for all the things people frequently do online. For instance, Playlist.new will create a new Spotify playlist for you. Docs.new will create a new Google Doc for you, etc. I don’t think my younger self could have predicted that […]

I have several blog posts that get thousands of pageviews per week for years running. For the first time, my podcast page is in the top spot. Thanks to all those that have subscribed. More episodes coming. And improved audio too.

Colin Walker on personal blogging
Colin Walker: Call it an inferiority complex, a belief that my life isn’t interesting as I don’t do that much. But, as Adam says, it’s the ordinary lives, the “random glimpses into humanity” that pique your interest, not just the grand gestures. My favorite blogs tend to be those that are informal, unedited, and reflect […]

Nick Carver on his photographs
Nick Carver, in an interview by Cody Schultz in early 2018: Certain artworks I’ve seen throughout my life have had a powerful impact on me. When I look at a painting by Kenton Nelson or a sculpture by Michael Heizer, I feel something deep in my psyche that I can’t put words to. I can’t […]

My podcast has propagated to Overcast – which is likely many iOS users podcatcher of choice. It is interesting how many different ways to consume a podcast there are now and how you sort of have to support them all.

My podcast is now available on Apple Podcasts! I updated the list of places you can subscribe. More to come this week.

Photos from the Off to the pub episode of Photowalking with Colin
I’m unsure of the best way to share the photos for each episode of my podcast. But for now, I’ll create a post for each episode that I share photos from. Open to suggestions. Cow line Just one from this episode to share.

Alastair Humphreys on blogging for 18 years
Alastair Humphreys, adventurer, blogger: I wrote my stories as I cycled around the world and updated my website intermittently whenever I found an internet connection stable enough to send a bunch of text. The screech of dial-up internet and being plunged into darkness by power cuts were regular accompaniments to my early days of blogging. […]

Thoughts on the Microsoft Surface event
I’m pretty excited for Microsoft. I’ve been excited for what they’ve been doing as a company, on several fronts, for a few years now. I won’t rehash all of the nice things I’ve been writing about them, but I can link to how I feel about Satya, the work they’ve been doing in open source […]

Today’s Microsoft Surface event was fantastic. I have lots and lots of thoughts but I’ll wait until they refresh their site with more information.

Audio: Read the manual (again)
Recorded September 30, 2019 Have you already read the manual for a product you own? After you’ve used it for a while, I recommend reading it again.

This new logo for Sandwich Video was exactly what I needed to see this Friday.

Auto Draft
Just recovered 15GB of disk space after deleting the expired cache that is built by WP Fastest Cache. I’m starting to think this plugin isn’t the best one to use.

Cape Cod – September 2019
Cape Cod – September 2019 Eliza, her mother, and I spent the very last few days of Summer in Cape Cod – whale watching, shopping, and barbecuing.
