These rather tall piles of coal slag sit just off a local main highway. Typically black, sometimes in the winter if we get enough snow they turn into what looks like an Arctic desert. When we had a fair bit of snow as winter 2020/21 ended I had the idea to shoot this stark landscape for the third time. I had taken images of these piles on digital in the past, but this time I’d shoot them on film. These images came out exactly as I had envisioned them.
Shot with the Mamiya 645 Pro TL on Ilford’s FP4. I had to trudge through nearly knee deep snow to get these. See more in the culm series.
