The new TechnoratiGlenn Rice: My first impression is that micro.blog could be the new, simpler Technorati for the rising IndieWeb tide – a nice centralised way for people to discover each other’s posts and sites without losing the decentralised, own-your-data nature of the indieweb. I have very fond memories of Technorati so I do not mind this comparison. Technorati […]

Today I did some maintenance on my domain name, registrar, hosting provider, and file structure for my site. I still have a few things I’d like to do in preparation for my personal blogging goals in 2018. I think it will be a banner blogging year for me.

Choosing without decidingSeth Godin: We can save a lot of time and effort by making our meaningless choices effortless. Pick the first one, or the one in alphabetical order or flip a coin. Merely have a rule and make the choice. This point made by a recent post by the inimitable Seth Godin strikes the same chord […]

SPARK Talks at the NEPA Tech meet up in December 2017SPARK Talks are, by definition, Short, Provocative, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Knowledgeable talks that are loosely timed, on a specific topic (more or less), and allow many presentations to be given at an event. I had never heard of them prior to this month’s NEPA Tech meet up organized by John George. SPARK Talks remind me of Lightning Talks or Ignite. […]

I think I will get used to this Pixel 2 XL camera. Very satisfied.

After a little more than a day with Android the thing I miss most is Tweetbot. The Twitter apps are terrible. I now understand why many people don’t see the value of a microblogging social network. Tweetbot is likely the only reason I can still use Twitter.
-
After over 10 years on iOS I’ve switched to Android on the Pixel 2 XL. So far an excellent experience.
-
Seriously considering a move to the Pixel. But what would I do with my Apple Watch? And how does one live without Tweetbot?

Andrew Canion’s podcast addictionAndrew Canion: I listen to a lot of podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for more than 10 years, way before they were mainstream. I used to load podcasts onto my work-supplied IBM ThinkPad and drive to work with it open on the passenger seat, playing podcasts. This was before I owned an iPod, let […]

Repost: Cabel Sasser re: Apple update caching👉 Cabel Sasser on Twitter: macOS 10.13 Tip: have lots of iOS / Mac devices in your house? And a Mac that’s usually on? Turn on "Content Caching" in Sharing prefs, and updates will be downloaded to all your devices from your Mac, saving time and bandwidth. LINK

Universal Apple appsMark Gurman, for Bloomberg: Starting as early as next year, software developers will be able to design a single application that works with a touchscreen or mouse and trackpad depending on whether it’s running on the iPhone and iPad operating system or on Mac hardware, according to people familiar with the matter. Remember the many times […]

I’m considering the reprising of my "best of the year lists" for this year. Just need to find the time. Here are the lists from 2008 and 2009.

Micro.blog is now publicManton Reece: Micro.blog is now available to anyone. There’s a limit of 100 new sign-ups each day, so that we can better respond to feedback as the community grows. I’ve been using Micro.blog on the web, Mac, and iOS for a few months and the community there has been great. In fact, the vast majority […]

No, you cannot simply pay me for a linkHi. You emailed me. Likely more than once. So I’ve sent you this URL to let you know that no, you cannot pay me for placing a link in an existing article that you somehow found on my site. It would be totally different if you wanted me to review a product, collaborate on some […]

An original iPhone shot – November 2009An original iPhone shot – November 2009 The short story behind this photo that I’ve recently stumbled across is that Eliza and I were on a cruise in late-2009. I took my iPhone and she was still lugging around her DSLR. We both snapped a photo at the same time. But, I had never thought […]

Squarespace raises at $1.7B valuationGerrit De Vynck for Bloomberg, on whether or not Squarespace should go public: Analysts and bankers have been expecting the company to go public since at least 2016. Casalena declined to comment on IPO plans but said he’s building a company capable of doing so. “We want to do this on our own time table,” […]

Please don’t try to explain Bitcoin at parties (unless you know what you’re talking about)Unless you’re drinking your flat whites under a rock, you’re likely seeing a lot of news about Bitcoin, it’s current exchange rate against the US Dollar, blockchain and it’s various applications, etc. You might even be getting sick of hearing about it (or, perhaps you’re sitting there earning hundreds or thousands of dollars per day […]

NFL and the SurfaceDan Thorp-Lancaster for Windows Central: Under the deal, the NFL will continue to use Microsoft Surface tablets for referee video reviews through the end of the 2018/2019 season, SportsPro reports. Coaches and players will also continue to use Surface tablets to review footage during games. I’m glad MSFT is sticking with this. You’ll recall this […]

Evergreen blog post trafficRod Hilton, creator of the aforementioned Machete Order, in December 2015 just as The Force Awakens was released: Wow, this Machete Order thing got big! After the post first "went viral" and got mentioned on Wired.com, I started getting around 2,000 visitors to it per day, which I thought was a lot. But then in […]

Recent gramsI’m trying my hand at Instagram again. This time I’ve created my own filter using Snapseed which I’ve named ColinGram2018. I’m taking some photos I’ve published here and re-editing them with some cropping, blurring, and using ColinGram2018 and then publishing them on the gram. Here are a few example images I’ve posted so far.

macOS High Sierra security vulnerabilityDan Moren, reporting on this tweet from Lemi Orhan Ergin: Unsurprisingly, that news has quickly rippled through the Apple community as many people—including yours truly—have verified the claim. You can test it for yourself by going to any locked System Preferences pane, trying to unlock it, and entering username rootwith no password. (The number of […]
