Overcast 2 is free

Overcast, the podcast player I use on my iPhone every single day, just got a rather nice update. Marco Arment:

After a year of work, Overcast 2 is now available as a free update for everyone. It’s mostly a major under-the-hood improvement, with relatively few user-facing changes. But they’re pretty good, I think.

I think the improvements are pretty good too, Marco. Also, the entire app (not just the upgrade) is free of charge. If you like it you can choose to pony up a few bucks now and then to help support its development.

Speculation: Overcast 2 is a fairly feature-complete app and will work rather well with routine updates as iOS / watchOS continue to mature. I think Marco will earn a handsome, but not too handsome, sum from this new subscription model but not enough to keep him interested in years-long development cycles for new versions. My guess is that he’ll a) begin working on a Mac app for Overcast or b) begin working on something all-new.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t invest a few of your heard-earned dollars to support Overcast (you should). I just think we’re about (read: months) to see Marco jump to something new.
