John Gruber on X

John Gruber, writing on his Daring Fireball blog that still isn’t a responsive design despite my pleading with him for years inside of my own head:

The culture on X today is remarkably friendly and inclusive. It is a cheerful place. That cheerfulness is another differentiator. If you believe the world is falling apart and doomed only to get worse, that our obvious and real problems cannot be surmounted, X is not the platform for you. If you think the world is full of fun and amazing people and things, that humanityโ€™s defining feature is our collective ability to solve any problem, that the only time better to be alive than today is tomorrow, it might be.

Twitter is long gone. It will never return. But X is a different place.

I am on X as @cdevroex. I post seldomly. I never said anything because everybody online is angry at every single thing these days. It is unbearable. I almost cannot take it. X is the only place on the web, other than a relatively few blogs that I follow, to keep up-to-date with development of large language models and other AI tools. It also happens to be a valuable source of information on many topics.

Mastodon is far and away my favorite social network. Its open, its truly federated, and I’ve found so many amazing people there. But lately it has felt like a bar on Route 66.
