Iris Photos for macOS
March 25, 2021
Iris:
Iris is pragmatic and does not impose a certain workflow on you. Just point the app at your photo library on disk, and Iris will take it from there. We also don’t limit you to a single “system” library that can easily fill up your laptop and force you to decide which photos to leave behind or trust to the cloud.
I urge you to read the entire Iris page. I was nodding my head the entire read. I’ve signed up. I want in. Given how I manage my photo library currently I can try Iris without skipping a beat.

@cdevroe After failing (twice) to stay all-in with the talented and capable Mylio for my photos, Iris looks like something to watch. Thanks for the link!
@jack 👊
@cdevroe Signed up, looks very interesting.
Also, still have to try your awesome theme, waiting for the responsive fix, and time to set everything up. Looks great, and I thank you for the awesome work you’ve done!
@maique Sometimes it pays to wait and let others find the bugs! But I’m very glad that people took their time to report the issues so I’m trying to fix them as quickly as possible.
@cdevroe I actually enjoy the beta testing process a lot, as I like fiddling with stuff and try to find where it breaks. Sadly time is not on my side now, and I believe one needs to have some of that available to fully participate in the process. A year ago I would have been all over this one, but I can’t make that commitment now, as I never know if I’ll have an hour available for it, or no time at all.
@maique Totally understand. Totally random aside: I hope to one day take your portrait if we ever cross paths.
@maique @jack Just chatted with Tyler Hall, developer of Iris, for a bit. Saw Iris. Definitely sign up. He’s onto something.
@cdevroe Ooh, good to know, thanks. Signed up and ready!.
@cdevroe @maique Curious whether you’ve ever tinkered with Mylio (as a comparison). I think Mylio is quite good at what it does and sounds like it takes a similar approach to Iris. Mylio just ended up being “too much” for me and I didn’t want to live there forever. It’s quite capable though. Files where I want them. Private sync to all devices. AI. etc.
@cdevroe It’s done, getting future updates on my mail 😊 Thanks.
@jack @maique I had seen it but I’ve never tried it. Unsure I like how it syncs, or that it appears to be a non-native app, but besides that it does look interesting.
@cdevroe @maique The sync worked well and consistently for me. But, I could never get used to the feel of the app. Scrolling, navigating, all were (as you say) non-standard and off-putting.
@cdevroe Thanks for sharing this. I can’t wait to see it!
