Northeastern Pennsylvania is still behind the times

May 24th, 2010

As I sit in our local Panera Bread, belly full of warm soup, after a day of traveling, meetings and recording an episode of Wine Library TV with my friend Gary – I’m reminded of this post about Panera and how it fills a void in our area.

As I read the post I began to think about how far northeastern Pennsylvania has come in the 5 years since I wrote it. I also realize realized how poor my writing was then, but that is the topic for another post for another time.

The truth is we’re not much better off than we were before. I’m sure the use of technology by businesses in our area has increased – as it probably has just about everywhere else – but there has yet to be any real impact in our area by any new companies leverage technology.

Consumer use of electronics is way up but for the same reasons people were using them 5 years ago – making phone calls and playing games. In 2005, pre-iPhone, I said “making phone calls” because they didn’t do much else. Now with Twitter, Facebook, Gowalla, etc. I suppose I should change that to “communications, networking and playing games”.

I’m not sure what I am hoping for. Perhaps it is for a few companies that are truly innovative to succeed in our area. Perhaps it is for people to use technology to make their lives or business easier – not more complicated.

Maybe rather than waiting for it to happen I need to be an example. And perhaps I already am. I just have to share it. And I think I will.

Random 60: Back up your computer, right now.

Random 60: Back up your computer, right now. | Favorite on Viddler.

Chris recently had a complete hard drive failure. Fortunately for him most of his data, since he is a Web site developer, was “on the Web” somewhere. Everything else he had backed up on an external hard drive.

Consider this a friendly reminder from Random 60 to back up your computer today.

Random 60: How would you use The Force?

Random 60: How would you use The Force? | Favorite on Viddler.

My friend Chris Coleman and I, from Panera Bread, discuss what we’d do if we had The Force. Chris, who I must thank for allowing me to use his shiny Kodak Zi6 to record today’s Random 60, says that he’d use Jedi mind tricks on dogs. Really, I didn’t want to know more. I think I’d use The Force for simple yet annoying tasks like trying to reach the TV remote when it is out of reach and I’m laying on the couch all comfy-like.

Doing the Panera Bread thing again

I’ve written about Panera before. How it, and other cafes with free wifi, provide a good solid atmosphere for clearing your head all while getting some work done.

Mike thinks I smell, so he is over there.

Atmosphere definitely lends itself to attitude – so if you find yourself slugging behind a little – get out of the office. Or come on down to Panera and say “Hi” to Mike and I. I’d recommend asking your boss first though. That is why I asked Eliza. ;) Now, to get a little somethin’ done.

You may notice that my web site has some new digs. Something that is probably obvious to you, is that I am not completely done with the home page, but the improvements that the theme brings to the table are too valuable not to launch it just a bit early.

One of the biggest complaints I’ve had since launching cdevroe.com was that there was no clear navigation between the main areas of the site. I was one of the complainers myself.

On Friday I decided to take a trip to Panera Bread to soak up some free wifi and some grub. I did this to get a slight change of scenery, and to focus on finishing what was the core of this redesign. The changes you see may not seem very extensive, but most of the changes will end up going rather unnoticed until I actually unleash each and every feature of this theme. Its current incarnation is not quite as robust as its final one will be, which will be released incrementally.

Panera’s atmosphere is actually fairly conducive to GTD. So I was able to pump out a fairly good portion of work in the amount of time it took my wife to do some shopping.

Credit for the small, yet fantastic, adjustments to the theme go to James Mathias who sacrificed some of his weekend for me. It is definitely nice to have friend that is willing to give you some of their well earned time off. Thanks a lot James – I owe you one.

Monday, July 3rd, 2006 – My site now validates as valid CSS and XHTML 1.0 Transitional.
