Dryocampa rubicunda

Perhaps better known as the Rosy Maple Moth, this moth was just outside our apartment building door.

My friend Chris just showed up for dinner and Game 4 of the NBA Finals and immediately he said there was a cool looking moth outside.  I grabbed my camera and bolted for the door.

On my finger, for scale.

How do I find out the real names for these moths?  It turns out there are an incredible amount of moth types.  I personally love Bug Guide’s tools for figuring out what bug you found.

I think I’m going to keep it a long-term goal to continue to add photos of moths to my site. As I mentioned on Twitter yesterday the number of referrals to my site from Google’s Image search for moth are staggering ((At least to me.)). I’m looking forward to working at this new goal.

In case you’ve missed them in the past, check out the Tolype Velleda and cecropia moth.
