The vibe coding litmus test

Unsure of what vibe coding is? See Simon Willison’s explanation of a term recently coined by Andrej Karpathy on X. It is a buzzword that is lighting the world in fire it seems.

But I just want to quickly recommend; do not hire anyone (a person or an agency) that thinks vibe coding is a good idea for production level products.

Experimenting? Playing? Thinking through ideas rapidly? Absolutely.

Think I’m crazy? Look at this email I just received from “Ian Foster” of Grayphite – a supposed “Cutting-Edge Software & AI solutions” business. I doubt Ian is a real person and I won’t link to Grayphite’s website because if this is how they spam into the market for customers they should be banned.

Hi Colin,

I just wanted to mention one last thing before I go. Vibe coding, a term introduced by Andrej Karpathy - the founding member of OpenAI team, is the latest approach of software development where developers use AI assistance to write code at 5x speed, reducing costs and time-to-market significantly.

At Grayphite, all of our developers were trained for vibe coding far before this term was introduced - probably the best thing that we are known for.

Reply with a number, and I’ll handle the rest.

Yes, l want to know more about Vibe Coding – I’d love to set up a time.
Let’s reconnect later – Follow up with me in a few months.
Not interested – Please get me off the list.
Best,
Ian Foster | Grayphite

Trying to trick customers into thinking that vibe coding is good because it will “write code at 5x speed”, reduce costs, etc. is misleading. By mentioning Andrej by name in this email “Ian” is likely trying to give Grayphite some credibility in the AI market. But anyone that knows what Andrej actually wrote in his tweet knows that “Ian”‘s mention of him does the opposite.

If you’re currently in the market for developers or agencies to help you build a product, do not hire anyone that recommends that you build the product by vibe coding. In fact, a litmus test may just be that you ask anyone you’re about to hire if they think vibe coding is a good idea for production level products.
