What is Facebook’s mission? Mark Zuckerberg, in the company’s founder letter that was included in their S-1 filing with the SEC prior to going public a few weeks ago.
There is a huge need and a huge opportunity to get everyone in the world connected, to give everyone a voice and to help transform society for the future. The scale of the technology and infrastructure that must be built is unprecedented, and we believe this is the most important problem we can focus on.
Between the myriads of unwanted game invites, crazy photos from last weekend, and our privacy options continuously getting changed it is sometimes hard to remember that Zuckerberg & Co. really want to connect the entire planet to a common platform.
Are they doing it? Even at nearly 1 billion users they are a far cry away from, say, the popularity of mobile phones in general or email. Facebook may never become as ubiquitous as these things but having such a grand mission always keeps the team focused on doing really, really big things – which will continue to work in Facebook’s favor.
