How is your penmanship? My penmanship is little more than chicken scratch. Since I’ve started writing more I’ve been practicing my penmanship. It is slowly getting better but I have a long way to go.
Here are some tutorials that I’ve followed, so far, that have helped my writing a little.
- Improving your handwriting.
- For reference: An image of the alphabet in cursive.
Yes I actually had to refer to an image of the alphabet in cursive to get back into the swing of things. That is how long it has been since I did any serious amount of writing in cursive.
Here is an example of how bad my penmanship is (click the image to zoom).

Here is mine!

Your writing is a lot better than mine! Thanks for commenting Kalie!
Here is an example of mine:

Wow, thanks Lance. I aspire to have writing like a girl!
My penmanship is terrible. Also, I can’t spell.
That’s awesome!
Like Josue said, awesome. Thanks Danny!
Twenty years!! About double as long as me!
Yeah. I’m 32 now, and I’m thinking I haven’t written cursive in a long time, maybe when I was 12 or 13. It was very hard to remember how to do it.
Josue you rock!
Here is an example of mine. I’ve noticed it’s gotten worse the more I type. It’s a good exercise to just write out a few lines slow and methodically.
Diana: Thanks so much for sharing! I like that third style there, really neat.
Howard: As I commented on your Flickr post… I really like your i and f. Thanks for sharing!

A video!! Great idea Chris. And yes, your penmanship is as bad as mine.
Here’s mine.

If you could just give me the URL I can fix the comment.
Everyone: Sorry that IMGs aren’t allowed. I tried to keep up with editing them.
Here you go.

Mine is also horrible. And just like you, I never write in cursive anymore except to sign my name, and that’s a signature not writing my name in cursive anymore. The exception is checks and I pretty much do all of that either via CC or electronic check.

Chris inspired me to do a video myself. Sorry about the poor video quality–the Flip doesn’t do too well at close range.
And, yes, I know I misspelled “handwriting”. Not sure how I pulled that one off…
Hahah! That is great!
Here’s some cursive from notes I took in a meeting. I switch between my regular messy writing (which is half cursive anyway) and messy cursive (which is half not cursive). lol. I should have done a side by side. There’s little distinction.
Laura thanks for posting yours. It is hard to tell but we can see it! I’ve fixed your comment too.
I like your little sweeping in from the left that you have on the beginning of your words.
Hi, I’m doing some research for my dissertation on handwriting. I don’t really know what cursive is, I never did it at school (or not that I can recall anyway. What is classed as cursive? longhand writing, or a copied form of writing that I keep finding on google images? My handwriting is quite nice in my opinion but wouldn’t know if it is classed as cursive!
Cheers!
P.S. is everyone from America? Maybe that’s why I’ve never done cursive!
It is also called script? I know that a lot of schools are no longer teaching it after the first few grades, so perhaps that is why?
US “cursive” is what Brits call “joined-up” writing. And yes, schools generally teach a standard form.
