Random 60: Back up your computer, right now. | Favorite on Viddler.
Chris recently had a complete hard drive failure. Fortunately for him most of his data, since he is a Web site developer, was “on the Web” somewhere. Everything else he had backed up on an external hard drive.
Consider this a friendly reminder from Random 60 to back up your computer today.
It looks cold outside.
Haha. It does. It was! (For those that are wondering why, this was recorded about a month ago.)
Yeah, I always have my 500gb backup drive plugged in. Time Machine runs throughout the day, and I have SuperDuper! do a backup every night. That way, I can restore any files with Time Machine, and if my computer dies, I can take my hard drive to any Mac, plug it in, boot up off the SuperDuper! image, and keep working.
This used to be my method too. I need to get back into the swing of things. I also need to find a good way to back up both my iTunes and iPhoto libraries (besides DVD back up).
I think I’m going to make an investment in “backing up” when I upgrade my laptop. Until then I’ll stick with backing stuff up to my Firewire drive.
What’s wrong with just having Time Machine back up your iTunes and iPhoto libraries?
I need to start taking this issue seriously. In the last decade of personal computing (since I’ve actually used the computer as a storage device), I’ve been immensely fortunate not to have lost any irreplaceable data on a computer. In a way, that’s good, but I keep sensing I’m due for something catastrophic.
Lately I’ve been looking into backup drives and online backup as well. Hopefully I make a decision on one or the other before it’s too late.
Me too (as far as never really losing anything major). But it is only a matter of time.
