Goodbye Dreamhost

As you may have noticed this website has been unavailable or erring for over 36 hours. This isn’t the first time that Dreamhost has had issues and it has effected my site. Over the years of my using Dreamhost there has been a lot of problems, a lot of downtime, a lot of headaches.

Any time you are on a shared hosting service you are bound to have some sort of hiccups, however, my main problem with Dreamhost is their reactionary approach to customer support. Even though they’ve had server issues that made my site has gone down, billing issues that made my account become suspended, and database issues that set my site back a few days each time, they’ve never tried – not even once – to fix my site until I beg for help. Usually that help comes fairly quickly but it is never solved on the first try – because they try to fix the issue very quickly instead of correctly.

I guess I’m just sick of being a small fish in a large pond.

If you’re reading this it means that this site has already been moved off of Dreamhost and I’m in the process of closing my account. I won’t say where I’m going yet (that’s a secret). But for now, goodbye Dreamhost.

Over the last few days TUG.n has been down. However, I’ve been experiencing problems with email for months, and I never even knew it. I’ve had everyone from clients to my mother telling me that I did not get their emails. My main personal email address is currently cdevroe(at)theubergeeks.net and has been for 5+ years. It turns out that my ChanceCube email is also outta whack, though the site is up. To top it all off, my phone number seems to not be “callable” from Japan!!

Currently I use Assurance Hosting as my registrar. But I’m switching away from it because even though I’ve setup all of my domains to “auto-renew”, they have never, ever done so. I’m using Dreamhost for many of my sites (not this site, I use Sonnex for this site and I’ve never had any trouble). And I’m using my local cable company for phone (voip) and Internet service.

At the moment, all of these services suck. I’ve put up with them for far too long and I’m going to attempt to move all of them over the next few weeks. Any suggestions? I want an easy transfer of all of my domains (registrar), my email addresses, my sites, files, databases, the entire thing. I do not want to put up with this much downtime ever again.

For those of you trying to reach me at the moment: email me at cdevroe@chancecube.com which now completely uses Google’s hosted email service and I’m checking it through the web interface since it fails to relay anything via POP properly. This is costing me a great deal of money, so I’d like my next switch to be to something very reliable.

I’ll even sign up under someone’s affiliate account if they can direct me towards something good.

9rules downtime

For anyone that checks my site, or will check my site, to see what is up with 9rules.com being down, it is due to a large scale power outage, in combination with a few generators becoming flame-throwers. So, it will be back up as soon as they can get everything together.

Side note: The team at Media Temple called me the very moment they knew something was up. Talk about service, these guys are great.

From what I’ve been able to determine, this effected all of Media Temple (mt) and DreamHost, as well as several smaller hosts (obviously those that resell for the above).

It is Friday night anyways. Go out, grab a beer, and watch some fireworks. That is what I am going to do.
