Last night while at a bar with a friend I started getting weird errors in Twitterrific 2. I was taking down notes, saving screenshots, all because I wanted to provide a good bug report to The Iconfactory when I had the chance. This morning I quickly checked their site and read this:

“We apologize for problems that iPhone and iPod touch Twitterrific users are currently experiencing due to the so-called Twitpocalypse.”

Ugh. Well, that saved me the time of writing up a bug report. But now I know it will be a little while before I can use my favorite Twitter application on the iPhone.

Update: At some point on Sunday evening an update to Twitterrific 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch had been approved through the App Store and is available through normal app updating methods. Seems to work peachy now.

Is anyone else experiencing this? When I first load Google Reader, and I use Fluid to do so, it is showing me the latest post from my subscriptions (see screenshot) in the All Items list. Â Even though I have it set to sort the order from oldest to newest.

To correct this issue, I only need to click on the View Settings… dropdown and select ‘Sort by Oldest…’ (which is already selected in the menu).

This has been happening for a few weeks now which is why I’m jotting it down here. Hopefully I’m not the only one having this problem, you’ll comment below, and the Google Reader team will see this post. One can hope!

Or, maybe it is just me?

WordPress 2.6 ignores upload preferences

Wordpress 2.6 has a bug in the media uploader.

WordPress 2.6 was released only a few days ago, so it isn’t too suprising that there are some bugs. Â But this bug seems like it would have been very easy to catch.

From my investigation, it appears that WordPress 2.6 ignores the upload preferences that I have set. Â By default WordPress likes to upload files, such as images, into a directory commonly located in /wp-content/uploads/. Â From there it creates a hierarchy based on the date you upload a piece of media.

For some reason, I had changed my preferences a while ago to be /wp-content/mobile/photos/ ((Presumably because I thought the only photos I’d uploading using WordPress would have been from my mobile phone.)). Â The only problem is now that this setting is ignored, when I want to upload a photo through WordPress’ “Add media” upload tool, it results in a broken image.

This is fairly easy to fix even while I write a post, since I’m able to edit the HTML of the post. Â However, WordPress handles each piece of media the same as it would a post to your site. Â So there is all types of data stored in the database for each media file uploaded. Â Title, description, caption, thumbnail URL, original URL, being some of the metadata that is being stored. Â Most of these I can edit through WordPress, some of them I can’t.

Take a look at my photos page. Â There is a broken image there, not because the file does not exist, but because WordPress is looking in the wrong spot. Â Unless I edit my database manually I will not be able to get that image to display properly.

I’ll do that soon, but I’m hoping someone sees this post that can address the problem for the next release.

Addendum: As db pointed out in the comments, the files are going to the correct locations. It just seems that the reference to the file, being written to the database, is in correct.

Update on July 18: As Simon points out in the comments, this is not necessarily a bug but it is unexpected behavior.  Read his comment for details on how to fix this in your 2.6 install, but it appears it will be “taken care of” in 2.6.1.

Another moth to add to my collection. I feel an exhibition.

Perhaps better known as the Rosy Maple Moth, this moth was just outside our apartment building door.

My friend Chris just showed up for dinner and Game 4 of the NBA Finals and immediately he said there was a cool looking moth outside. Â I grabbed my camera and bolted for the door.

On my finger, for scale.

How do I find out the real names for these moths? Â It turns out there are an incredible amount of moth types. Â I personally love Bug Guide’s tools for figuring out what bug you found.

I think I’m going to keep it a long-term goal to continue to add photos of moths to my site. As I mentioned on Twitter yesterday the number of referrals to my site from Google’s Image search for moth are staggering ((At least to me.)). I’m looking forward to working at this new goal.

In case you’ve missed them in the past, check out the Tolype Velleda and cecropia moth.

There is an odd bug in the latest version of Safari mobile.

While my friend Chris Masto, whom I met through Viddler, and I waited to go to lunch on Thursday in New York City he mentioned to me how much he likes to use Hahlo as his Twitter application of choice on his iPhone. Chris was probably the tenth person in a week to tell me to use Hahlo. However, he described an annoying bug that he found in Hahlo – but after he described it I thought it was a bug in Safari Mobile. Time would tell.

After lunch I decided to switch from Thincloud’s Twitter application to Hahlo and give it a whirl. Hahlo is great. It is quick, easy, and does nearly everything I need to interact with Twitter* and does it in an aesthetically pleasing way. I highly recommend using Hahlo.

Onto the Safari mobile bug. If you click a link in a tweet it will open a new tab in Safari mobile with that URL loaded in it. This is exactly as it should happen, because you wouldn’t want to have to navigate back to Hahlo. However, if you close the tab that it opened, Safari will replace Hahlo with the last tabs URL. This gets to be pretty annoying and I’ve found it happening in other applications besides Hahlo.

I have yet to figure out a sure-fire way to reproduce this in a consistent way and I can’t seem to find a pattern for successful opening and closings of tabs. But I can say this; this bug happens just about every single time a tinyURL is involved.

I’ve emailed Dean Robinson, lead developer of Hahlo, and he’s looking into it. I’ve also described the bug and submitted it to Apple Support.

Has anyone else seen this? Can you figure out why this is? Secondly, John Gruber recently stated that he’s finding the latest version of the iPhone’s software to be buggier than the previous – and I agree with him.

* By “nearly” I mean that Hahlo doesn’t yet have the ability to “friend” someone. Seems a little odd but Dean has assured me that it is in an upcoming release. Gauging from the work Dean has done so far on Hahlo – I’m sure it will be worth the wait.
