Don't forget OmniWeb, it's got the same fast webkit. I'm using it because of the workspaces feature.

Anyway, nice post, and I can't wait to check out leopard.

Chris Coleman: Agreed. My thoughts on Safari, at least in this article, are purely based on the application that surrounds the rendering engine. I knew about Webkit nightly builds since Apple branched off that development a few years ago. Having the very latest rendering engine isn't of too much use to me anymore.

Though I am always happy to see a speed increase in how a web page is rendered in each new version of any browser - and Safari on Leopard is significantly faster than it was on Tiger, and it was faster on Tiger than any other browser. As far as speed is concerned; Safari wins by at least a few lengths.

The only differences in Webkit are in its rendering capabilities (check out the CSS animation in the latest builds). You won't see any added features aside from that sort of stuff. But to someone like you, that's certainly not insignificant.

Steven: Thanks for the tip, and I have seen that there are nightly builds of Webkit but I didn't know that Safari itself was being released as a nightly too? Are there any major differences between the current version of Safari available on Leopard and the nightlies? Are some of the things I mentioned above addressed?

I suppose I'll have to investigate! Thanks again.

You should check out the Nightly Builds of Safari. They are
available at http://webkit.org and I have been amazed at how
stable and feature packed it is.

Whenever a new version comes out for any of the major browsers, I usually like to mess around.

After discovering (through a variety of sources) that selects are blatantly broken in Firefox on Leopard, I've migrated over to Camino for the time being. I've really never given Safari a second look, but being that Safari3 sports a much newer version of WebKit, I might just give it a whirl.

The only think I miss is the quick searches. It's great to be able to type "imdb whatever" and then search imdb, or whatever. It sucks because it is something that I do use several times a day for work, but the rest of Safari is so nice that I've made the switch. I went back to Safari at home when the Safari 3 beta came out.
