I agree and the escalator metaphor is perfect. While the majority of standards developers are taking one step at a time, the general public is standing still and the innovators — all 12 of them — are taking two steps at a time.

A large part of the problem, in my opinion, is that the bloggers think the standards war is over because most blogging solutions are all implementing current standards. The other reason being that a lot of new developers on the scene are doing just as you say, copying other work already out there but not understanding why it was coded that way.

This all leads to the new “breed” of developer being lazy. These developers in a few months are going to be the same as current developers still using tables/font tags. Unfortunately it's almost expected. With the proliferation/dissemination of information certain markets get flooded. Over time those lagging will drop out but the initial burst, which is what we're seeing, will be tough.

In the end I think it's time to do something as well. I've been writting about it a bit and will continue to do so on Screenflicker.com/blog/ as well.

Colin, thank you so much and I hope you believe me when I say that this is the best piece of writing I've seen all day. That makes me happy.

Self promotion is on the rise, group mentality pollutes public opinion and people are forgetting the important things in life.

Listen to other people but don't forget to listen to yourself. The world afterall is a crazy place. But don't worry, there is always hope as long as there are good people out there to listen.
