Be a Parkour pro in Mirror’s Edge
I’ve had my ear to the ground regarding Parkour-related things since I featured a video about Parkour in January of 2007 on the Viddler blog.
Mirror’s Edge Launch Trailer uploaded by Joystiq
On a recent rip to New York City my friend Jonathan Christopher mentioned Mirror’s Edge, a video game where you are doing Parkour in first-person. He told me to check out the demo, but I haven’t yet.
Anyway, today I found this video on Viddler. It doesn’t show you in-game action but rather gives you a general sense for the story behind the game. After a quick search I found the launch trailer which does show you some in-game footage.
In other words, I’ll be downloading that demo later tonight Jon.

I was intrigued until the security guards and guns came in. What would be wrong with creating a parkour game ala Tony Hawk where run around a course and gain points? Why does it have to include shooting, guns, and killing security guards?
Parkour isn’t the least bit violent or malicious. The people who perform parkour generally do it for sense of personal accomplishment.
I guess someone at EA watched Casino Royale one too many times.

Jared: Interesting perspective and good point. Perhaps EA thought that the objective of delivering a message of some sort was better than just a point-based game. It’d be neat to see some behind-the-scenes content on making this game to see why they made the decision that they did.

Colin: This looks really rad! If only I didn’t suck at first-person RPGs. A virtual reality version of this game would be sweet; parkouring in risky locations without the possibility of slipping to my death.
I want to go outside and parkour now!
Jared: I was startled by that too! ‘Security guards? Punching? C’mon!‘
But I thought about it: If I were engaging in the act of parkour on rooftops and other private properties without prior consent, I’m sure there would be some kind of law enforcement that wouldn’t want me there.
