Problems with LiveJournal and OpenID

Back on May 25th I uploaded this screenshot to my Flickr account hoping that someone else would have had the same issues that I was having using my OpenID while trying to leave a comment on LiveJournal. Yet, no one has responded yet.

Fast forward nearly a month and I’ve since emailed Live Journal, did some browsing on the Internet trying to find a solution, and still I have yet to figure out why my OpenID is not working when I try to leave a comment on a friend’s LiveJournal. Here is a screencast to show exactly what happens:

A video demonstration of the LiveJournal error

If you are having similar issues using your OpenID on LiveJournal, please leave your experiences in the comments and hopefully someone from their development team will see this entry. If you know why this is happening and how I can fix it, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I posted a response on your video - but here’s the link to my LJ: http://misfitmonkey.livejournal.com, and I currently have anonymous commenting disabled (only registered users can comment). If you want to try commenting with OpenID and then I’ll enable anonymous commenting and see what happens?

Brandice: The problem isn’t not being able to comment at all, the problem is that I want to use OpenID to do so. If you’ll notice in the video, my friend indeed does have anonymous commenting enabled.

If, in fact, you’re right - then LiveJournal should definitely change that policy because using OpenID is hardly an anonymous comments. It is the opposite!!

Have you checked how your openid server is working? This is quite a useful tool for debugging openid problems:

Elliot Cable: Thanks for the link, but as far as I can tell my domain checks out? Do you find the same?

  5. Brandice Says:

Colin: Yeah, I would look into whether they’ve somehow categorized OpenID with anonymous comments, which, knowing LJ, is entirely possible (they handle some things strangely). I wonder if you’re not the only one having the problem, because I’ve never had an OpenID comment.

Tell LJ to get their butts in gear!
