Ops, sorry, I've messed up the notation in the previous post. The sentence should read: if a message is in B, it should be in A (by the first rule), but then it should not be in B (by the second rule), which is contradictory.

Of course, it doesn't, and that's a good thing! My example was meant to show you why, when you select "Message is not in mailbox...", you are not allowed to pick a smart mailbox. The first rule says that smart mailbox A should contain all the messages that are in smart mailbox B; the second rule states that smart mailbox B should contain all the messages but those in A. This kind of circularity makes the definition of A and B ambiguous: if a message is in A, it should be in B (by the first rule), but then it should not be in A (by rule B), which is contradictory. I hope it's clear now.

Nicola: I've tried that, but it doesn't work for Smart Mailboxes (sadly).

About the "oddity" of smart mailboxes rules: consider having smart mailboxes A and B, with the following rules, respectively:

A: "Message is in mailbox: B"
B: "Message is not in mailbox: A"

Figure this? :)
