I think it is a fantastic development and well presented in Colin's post. It is the same reason for having more than one anchor store in a shopping mall. If there was only a one department store like Bloomie's you might never go to the mall. But because and Sak's and Barney's are anchored there as well, you might end up going to that mall. (substitute Penny's, Mervyn's and Target if those are your preferred stores).

More importantly because of the presence of the other anchors, one day you just might decide to drop into a Bloomie's- because you are there already.

I fully agree that the crumbs will fall, because I don't think people will pay to upload short-form video when there are an excess of free alternatives that do almost everything better. This is not great for Flickr, it will show the distinct short-comings this new service has especially to those who are active on other video sharing sites.

Flickr will always be arguably the best photo sharing site on the Internet. I'm more interested in how they market this and how they intend to grow the service. Will Flickr be a photo-sharing service that does video, or a multimedia-sharing service? I'm always reminded of that old adage/cliche, "Go Big or Go Home!" I don't think Flickr went big enough, and they needed to.

I totally agree with you regarding Flickr saving themselves a lot of headache buy limiting both the file size and duration. With that being said, I think the type of videos that you'll see uploaded on Flickr will be the "artsy" time-lapse videos or something that will compliment their photos. Maybe short how to video on how they got the shot, Camera settings, etc.

Chris, I believe Viddler has comparable Family/Friend permissions built-in as well. I haven't checked out Flickr's to see how extensive they are, but I know that I can limit my Viddler vids' accessibility by family/friend criteria.

I've got a Flickr Pro acct and this change impacts me very little. To me Flickr is and will always be a photo site. The video stuff is just an extra feature I probably will not utilize. Sites like Viddler, Vimeo, YouTube, etc. do it better. The one thing Flickr has in its favor, and I think I heard Dan Benjamin say this via Twitter... is the Family/Friend permissions already built-in. But, honestly, that's not enough for me to use it exclusively.

Colin, I've got to agree with you across the board here. I think Flickr video is a great addition to (currently Pro) members. It's going to whet the appetite of many Flickr users not only to maybe go Pro on Flickr, but also expose them to the world of online video. They're not stepping on the toes of any current services with their unique limitations, and all in all I think it was a good move.
