Y'know, what looking at all of these makes me think is that I really haven't really ever done a radical re-design. Most of my designs are just re-hashes of the same thing that I've been using since 1999, the three-column look with the three-column-wide header at the top and the three-column-wide footer at the bottom. I always think about doing something radical and new, but then fall back on the familiar. Maybe that means it's time to have someone consult on the design? I don't know.

Anyway, I don't think they're all as bad as you think they are Colin. Some of them are bad, some of them could use some tender-loving care to make them not-so-bad, and some of them are actually pretty darned good. What I think the whole body of work shows is that you've got some skillz and that you're willing to try new things. Which is good.

Hope that helps.

I'm just glad to see I'm not the only one who has changed his design a lot in the past. Tumblelogs are fun. I turned openswitch into one for a while and it was great. The pressure to write long essays is lifted which freed me to do other things like find great links. I ended up missing the long essays though. I think for some bloggers they're just never satisfied with the design they have and always want something one better, if that makes sense.

Stu: Thanks! I am really looking forward to the new design.

Lisa: Actually, that is exactly what I'm doing -- a "tumblr-eque" Wordpress theme.

Eliza: Hah! Thanks... but most of them are horrible.

I like your designs. Not bad at all. Crisp.. clean. I particularly like the Nov. '07 one where it appears like you ate a double pepperoni pizza the night before designing. Always gives me nightmares.. No seriously, I like its originality and the photoshop work is really good. I'm actually looking for either a kickass wordpress theme or maybe tumblr, and your work is inspirational.

Keep it up!

Colin,

Must have taken some work to put this post together. Kudos for all the hard work. It's a good read, inspires me to do better.

Hope the new design will be glorious and full of awesome.
