mchen: I am not sure that Aperture is "made" to be a photo editing package for this purpose. Obviously Aperture has some editing capabilities that iPhoto does not, but - it isn't made to be an editor.

You may want to try this; Aperture has a setting that allows you to "import" an iPhoto library while leaving your iPhoto library intact. What you could do is open Aperture when you want to edit the photos, and then open iPhoto when you want to create albums, books, email photos, or - whatever else that you do in iPhoto. Essentially, you'd only be using Aperture "when you want to edit" but not as "an editor". Perhaps this will work?

Otherwise, my only other recommendation would be to use Photoshop or Photoshop Express.

Hi Colin,

Seems like you've had some experience using both iphoto and aperture. maybe you can help me. i too have reverted back to iphoto - aperture for me was sluggish and tended to hang with my full library loaded -- but I still want to use aperture to edit photos. i set iphoto to edit using aperture in the settings.. but when i click edit on a photo, it just opens aperture without showing the picture selected... shouldn't it just open the picture in aperture edit mode?
if you have any advice.. I would appreciate it.. thanks!

Randy: Thanks for the suggestion. I may actually use this, in conjunction with some jiggery, so that I can have only highly rated photos on my local hard drive while retaining "the rest" on my external drives.

I'm very, very, afraid that I'm about to lose hundreds of hours of work.

Thanks!

Hi Colin,

I Googled on "iPhoto Offline" and saw mention of "iPhoto Library Manager", which seems to address the problem of moving iPhoto stuff off to external disks.

http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

As for moving back from Aperture to iPhoto, I'm guessing you're best off just getting IPLM, importing the images back into iPhoto, and calling it a day.

Now, if you need someone to sell that Aperture license to, I might be interested :)

Cheers!
