[...] I set the goal to run a mile before today because I figured it was a good idea to set goals. If I didn’t make it I could have said “Well, I tried. And at least I’m a better jogger now than I was when I started.” And I kept telling myself that even up until the last step of the run. [...]

[...] According to most charts I’ve been able to find, a man of my height (between 6′1″ and 6′2″ depending on how big my hair is) should weigh 188 pounds or less. From that perspective I suppose you could say that I’m four pounds away from being in the “healthy” range, rather than being in the overweight or flirting with the obese category. However, I will most likely need to lose about 10-15 more pounds of fat, and increase my muscle by a few pounds. I’m looking forward to “completing” the journey soon, and then maintaining my goals and my drive towards other goals I’ve set for myself. What goals you ask? Well one you already know about, but I have a few others up my sleeve that I’ll be setting soon. [...]

I did that about a year ago - one mile without stopping. Wow - it was hard. For some folks this might be nothing at all, but for some of us, this is a really hard goal. And I'm not even THAT out of shape - just a few extra pounds, but no endurance for running whatsoever. Good luck!

I have the same problem as you with running; why do it?
If there is a dog going to chew my ass off I can run, if I need to get some where I run, but if I'm just out for a laugh where is the motivation?

Good luck with your goal anyway!

Seriously, 1 mile is NOTHING. I'm short and unfit and I can periodically get up and go run a 10K (6.2 miles) with no training, so you should be able to do 1 mile.

I've been meaning to start running again -- it's a really great exercise and habit to get into.

Start with a mile and soon you'll be able to do 3 miles and maybe even start doing periodic 5 mile runs easy. Good luck.

Chris: No idea what any of that means. But I'll take it as motivation.
