Garrett Murray’s “Social Etiquette Rules For Instant Messenger Use”

This is a fine, fine list by Mr. Murray. I wouldn’t change a single one, though I’d add a few.  The first one would be similar to Garrett’s first rule, about setting yourself as “away”. However, I’d say the opposite is also true. If you are not away, please do not sign on as “Away” all freaking day! The other rules that I’d add are less etiquette and more personal style choices and pet peeves of mine.

  • Use capitalization, punctuation, and proper grammar.
  • Type more than two words at a time. You know, complete a thought or message.

In April of this year I wrote somewhat at length about that second one.

Funny considering I almost always type to you in two word lines whilst talking to you on aim.
