Hey Colin,

I’m still thinking about a way to implement the use of labels – I used labels for the first few weeks and then stopped. I will keep brainstorming ideas for how to make use of Labels as to better use gmail, and will let you know what I come up with.

I use label to organize with filters. All social apps (FB, Twitter, etc.) get archived and applied the label “Social Apps”. That way they don’t clog my inbox and I can focus on them later.

I also use labels so that my banking is separated, all my family email gets moved, etc.

The only thing that really is actually shown in my inbox is mail from other sources. I just use it to stay organized. I view them as folders.

I use labels just like folders, and I apply multiple labels to messages â€” sorry, ‘conversations’ â€” that require them.

The thing I love about Gmail’s labels is that I can create a filter to tell e-mails from an aliased e-mail address to apply a specific label to that conversation.

E.g., E-mails addressed to myname+bacn@gmail.com get applied a ‘Bacn’ label.

I used to filter and label anything that was ‘mailing list-esque’, but I’ve recently abandoned that and now use them as temporary buckets into which I put things thematically related. For instance, we’re going to a wedding in a few weeks; all related mail goes in that label. We’re going to the US in a month and a half, all mail relating to that goes in that label.

If you’re an Inbox Zero user, labels would also apply to that system.
