Kyle: And those that were alive during that time period will be jealous to not be alive when, say, the first maned mission to Mars happens. :)

I agree with you that exploration of space is important. Much of the technology to solve the problems of space exploration have turned out to be very valuable for problems here on Earth. That alone is reason enough to keep pushing the envelope.

Ah, but you see, you're talking with an aspiring astrophysicist :). I think the answer to many of the "big questions" in life: where did we come from, why are we here, etc. can be answered by space exploration and the search for life in other parts of the universe. Research here on Earth is certainly important (and a whole lot cheaper), but I think it's important to always be pushing for more and more space exploration.

I'm guess I'm just bitter about not being alive to witness the Apollo missions :).

Kyle: I can not even begin to imagine a day where we'd be able to visit distant planets or at least orbit them. Much of Earth's surface and species have yet to be fully researched - so I am wondering if we should focus here first?

Pretty amazing that Cassini was launched over 10 years ago, is nearly a billion miles away, yet still is sending back such awe inspiring photos, and the camera in it isn't nearly as good as anything we have today. I can only hope that one day humans will be able to travel as far to see these things with their own eyes.
