The diet log makes a comeback, in a whole new way
I used to write a diet log, that is - when I was actually on a diet. Mike, Chris and I will be “competing” in a diet contest.
Since it is very hard to compete for pounds, or percentage of body fat, etc - we’ve decided that we’re just going to try to help each other lose weight until we reach our goal weight.
Tomorrow marks day one of this venture, and I will be releasing what my current weight and goal weight are. So stay tuned to our three sites for updates.
If you’d like to join us, send me an email or comment, and we’ll add you to the list. I setup a quick page to keep track of all those that are going to join us. Tell your friends and family members, and join in.
Update - I created a page to keep track of dieters.
Also, remember that tomorrow is weigh in time so post on your respective sites your current weight and your goal weight (if you have a real goal set in mind yet). Photos are welcome (I will be doing one whether you wanna see my naked self or not), but are definitely optional.
Another update - As expected, we’re not alone and people are coming from all over to join up. We really appreciate the help. Even if you don’t join the effort for yourself, join it for us. We need all the support we can get.
If you have a blog, use it to tell your audience to join in before tomorrow. Tell your best friend to do it with you, your sibling, or your parents. For this type of thing to really work, we need to try to let others know that we’re trying - so that they can help out.
Update (wow) - Wow. This type of response is overwhelming. And I wanted to make a few things clear to those that emailed me, etc. You can sign up at any point you don’t need to start today. Also, the word “diet” doesn’t stand for weight-loss. If you need to put on a few pounds, or just generally eat healthier, this effort is for you too. I know a lot of people struggle with being too skinny, or their overall perception of themselves, and you need to know that you are not alone in that. So join up, we’re all here for you.
Oh, and about transplanting my fat to a skinny person? You’d have to pay me for this fat. I’ve worked long and hard for it.
Day one weigh in people! Make sure you subscribe to every site on the list of dieters so you can track everyone’s progress, and be motivated to continue.
- If you are going to do photos with your weigh-ins, you may now post them to our very own group on Flickr.

Im so in! I never last more than 2 weeks… maybe this will be some motivation!

I’ll give it a shot. Nothing like a little competition to push me.

[...] As a geek — or Über geek — I’ve noticed myself becoming more and more rotund. Since I used to be an athlete and very active during my childhood and through high school my shape and weight are starting to annoy me. Colin Devroe and Chris Fehnel feel the same way. [...]

I’m up for it - I’m off on holiday over summer and want to shed a few pounds!
May 29th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
I’m in. I am not developing a “gravitational field” but I do need to loose a bit of weight.
May 29th, 2006 at 12:56 pm
I recently lost a lot of weight through changing my diet and starting yoga. I found by reducing the amount of wheat and diary and balancing more towards a vegetarian diet. Small changes like eating breakfast which is one meal a lot of people skip. Small changes often lead to big balance tips on the scales. Doing it as a group is a great way to support each other and when you are dieting that is what is definetly needed.
May 29th, 2006 at 1:10 pm
Count me in too. I’ve been dieting since February, so this will just be a continuation of my diet. I will release my current weight tomorrow on my website.

May 29th, 2006 at 1:15 pm
[...] But enough about that… the “real” launch will come soon, and I’ll tell anyone who’d care to know more about myself and the work I do. Anyone who’d care to join us is welcome, just hop over here and leave a comment. [...]

I’m down for it too.
My husband and I were talking about losing weight and reaching a goal just a week ago.
He said if I reach my goal of losing 20 lbs by the end of the year, he’d give me 1,000 dollars! haha
So I’ll join you guys. For sure.

[...] One of the benefits of working with the 9rules guys is their amazing sense of creativity. I never know what they might do…keeps me on my toes. Today is an example, Colin has started a Diet Contest. Starting May 30, 2006 a group of people (whoever wants to join) will work together towards a weight loss goal. Pretty cool, isn’t it? Mike is joining in too. If you’re interested in joining The Diet, head on over and sign up. I hope it ends up being a large number of people working together to get more healthy. Love it. [...]

I’m in as well. I gained about 20 pounds over the last 5 months while down for the count with mononucleosis. I remember joking about the “kissing disease” back in middle school, but man, I had no idea it hit so hard.
So not only am I starting to freelance web design, I’m adding in losing 40 pounds (target: 200 pounds) too. The mono must have messed with my head more than I thought.
May 29th, 2006 at 6:06 pm
I’ll join. I’m not so sure I’ll change my diet so much as just move around more and sweat now that it’s summer.

[...] Hey, so you wanna lose weight with the help of me and a bunch of other bloggers? You do, right!? Yeah, you do. So why don’t you go sign up over at Colin’s blog and join the list of people who are gonna jump on the bandwagon to try to help each other lose weight? I started working out a few weeks ago. And although I’m not sticking to it as faithfully as I should, maybe this will help me stay motivated. I actually bought an Exercise Ball a few months ago and never used it. I will start using it now! I’m pulling out my free weights from my closet. If it rains, and I can’t go to the track, I’ll go to the gym on base and use the treadmill. Whatever I can. Go sign up before tomorrow and let me know if you did. Set yourself an amount of weight you want to lose. I have decided I want to lose 20 lbs by the end of this year! Yes, because if I get pregnant through IVF next year in January, I want to at least have lost some weight before I gain some more through a pregnancy. If I gain pregnancy weight on top of what I’ve gained now, HOLY COW! I’m gonna turn into a whale, seriously! I’m starting faithfully tomorrow. No more jokin’ around. I have a wedding to attend in less than 2 months, so… I’m really motivated right now! I can do this. YOU can do this. WE can do this! Come on… do it. You know you want to. I will be posting my current weight and my goal weight tomorrow. Who wants to join? Dude, I’m so gonna do this! The pool already opened here on base, I HAVE to lose weight. [...]

Cute idea! Anyone who reads my blog knows I’m well-versed in the weight struggle. I’d join up, but my case is a bit different I suppose. I just don’t do diets anymore. I do a food plan and fitness for stress management. Much more effective approach for me. Plus I’ve ran more variations of ‘diet’ blogs than you can shake a stick at, hehe. I’ll pass, but I wish you all health & success.
May 30th, 2006 at 2:07 am
Add me to the list. Although, I won’t be trying to lose wait, I’ll be trying to gain. No matter what I try - protein shakes, eating binges, weight time, etc - the pounds don’t stick. I’ve been stuck at a 178lb mark (6′2″) for the past four years. I think an extra 10-15 would do a body good.
May 30th, 2006 at 10:04 am

Coincidentally enough, I started my diet today without knowledge of this contest. It’tl only help me motivate myself. I’m in!
May 30th, 2006 at 11:40 am
Ok, This is just the motivation I need. When I first turned 30 I noticed a major increase in my wieght. I gained 30 pounds over last year. Most can not tell, but when you go to put on your clothes and they don’t even come close to fitting, that is a definite indicator you have gained some weight. I have since then lost about 15 pounds. but I would love to get about another 10 off, or at least get in shape. I can’t walk up my stairs without having an asthma attack.
May 30th, 2006 at 12:20 pm

YEah, I’m in. As a climber who now weighs over 300 lbs., something has to be done and I have to be the one to do it.
How?
I’m going to start planning my meals for three days in advance AND I’M GOING TO PHOTOGRAPH EVERYTHING I EAT, WHICH I WILL POST ON A XANGA BLOG SITE. It’s nice over there. I’m going to try the same thing with exercise sessions, showing me getting to the gym, etc.
An actual eating plan?
Chicken. Chicken, chicken and chicken, with turkey when I get bored. I’ll be pretty liberal with sauces and marinades (liberal in choices, not amounts-I’m not just gonna cook a pound of buitter and call it a sauce…). Basically, it’s a simplified Atkins plan. In restaurants, I’ll stick to salads.
Big problems will be going out for Thai after climbing or on weekends; I’ll have to plan ahead, no side dishes.
My goal? My ultimate goal? 240. Wow. 240; less than I weighed in college.
My goals this week:
a. eliminate bread, crackers and chips
June 1st, 2006 at 10:59 am
I’m in! This is the inspiration I need to get back to my goal weight. I also want to clean up my eating habits and make better food choices. I don’t have much to lose, but my goal includes maintaining my new weight for good. Thanks Colin (and everyone else participating). I’m cheering you on.

Shortly after Christmas my doctor prescribed Mirtazapine, an antidepresant. At the time my weight was somewhere between 9 - 9.5 stone (130ish pounds) - I was underweight for my height (5′11). Like many other people, Mirtazapine caused my metabolism to slow and I gained 2stone (20% of my original weight). The drugs did work and I feel much better, but now want to have a healthy lifestyle and fight my depression and anxiety naturally.
Last Wednesday (1st June 2006) I embarked on my new health plan. I no longer smoke or take Mirtazapine, I eat at least 5 portions of fruit/Veg a day, do some form of daily exercise (usually tennis or cycling - but on Saturday I went punting!), drink 2litres of water a day (and no fizzy pop), and take daily vitamins. I also record my success on a chart each day which includes the amount of studying I have done and the amount of sleep I get.
My goal is to weigh 9.5 stone (133pounds).

I think this will be a good motivator for me. I’ve been struggling with weight issues since I was a kid and I haven’t been able to keep the weight I lose off. Maybe this will help me do that. Count me in.

I just came across this site, add me to the list. I actually started April 10th when I was tired of carrying around 225-230 lbs. As of yesterday morning June 12th I was at 201. Looking for a target of 175-180. With a short term goal of hitting 190 by early-mid July.

I stumbled across The Diet while on flickr and it sounds like a good source of motivation. I do have a mostly dormant blog where I can post updates, but I might wind up posting updates on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/wallyhartshorn/. Maybe I’ll create a set and post weekly photos of myself on weigh-in day. We’ll see.
I’m 6′1″ and in the neighborhood of 265. I’d like to be down below 190. We’ll see.
