I used to write a diet log, that is – when I was actually on a diet. Mike, Chris and I will be “competing” in a diet contest.
Since it is very hard to compete for pounds, or percentage of body fat, etc – we’ve decided that we’re just going to try to help each other lose weight until we reach our goal weight.
Tomorrow marks day one of this venture, and I will be releasing what my current weight and goal weight are. So stay tuned to our three sites for updates.
If you’d like to join us, send me an email or comment, and we’ll add you to the list. I setup a quick page to keep track of all those that are going to join us. Tell your friends and family members, and join in.
Update – I created a page to keep track of dieters.
Also, remember that tomorrow is weigh in time so post on your respective sites your current weight and your goal weight (if you have a real goal set in mind yet). Photos are welcome (I will be doing one whether you wanna see my naked self or not), but are definitely optional.
Another update – As expected, we’re not alone and people are coming from all over to join up. We really appreciate the help. Even if you don’t join the effort for yourself, join it for us. We need all the support we can get.
If you have a blog, use it to tell your audience to join in before tomorrow. Tell your best friend to do it with you, your sibling, or your parents. For this type of thing to really work, we need to try to let others know that we’re trying – so that they can help out.
Update (wow) – Wow. This type of response is overwhelming. And I wanted to make a few things clear to those that emailed me, etc. You can sign up at any point you don’t need to start today. Also, the word “diet” doesn’t stand for weight-loss. If you need to put on a few pounds, or just generally eat healthier, this effort is for you too. I know a lot of people struggle with being too skinny, or their overall perception of themselves, and you need to know that you are not alone in that. So join up, we’re all here for you.
Oh, and about transplanting my fat to a skinny person? You’d have to pay me for this fat. I’ve worked long and hard for it.
Day one weigh in people! Make sure you subscribe to every site on the list of dieters so you can track everyone’s progress, and be motivated to continue.
– If you are going to do photos with your weigh-ins, you may now post them to our very own group on Flickr.
[tags]diet, dieting, mike stickel, chris fehnel[/tags]
well you guys are definitely not fat, but it’s always good to lose weight.
Umm, we’ll be posting photos Josue – so you will be proven extremely wrong.
Count me in – I’m starting to generate a noticeable gravitational field.
Im so in! I never last more than 2 weeks… maybe this will be some motivation!
I’ll give it a shot. Nothing like a little competition to push me.
oooooooh yaaaaaa!! This is going to be awesome. Bye bye fatness, helloooo ladies.
I’m up for it – I’m off on holiday over summer and want to shed a few pounds!
I’m in. I am not developing a “gravitational field” but I do need to loose a bit of weight.
I recently lost a lot of weight through changing my diet and starting yoga. I found by reducing the amount of wheat and diary and balancing more towards a vegetarian diet. Small changes like eating breakfast which is one meal a lot of people skip. Small changes often lead to big balance tips on the scales. Doing it as a group is a great way to support each other and when you are dieting that is what is definetly needed.
Count me in too. I’ve been dieting since February, so this will just be a continuation of my diet. I will release my current weight tomorrow on my website.
Yeah I’m down too.
I’m down for it too.
My husband and I were talking about losing weight and reaching a goal just a week ago.
He said if I reach my goal of losing 20 lbs by the end of the year, he’d give me 1,000 dollars! haha
So I’ll join you guys. For sure.
Sign me up!
Join me up for the diet list,
If I had weight to lose I would join in, hehehe, but this is a cool idea. Here is a cool site for logging your progress: weEndure
I’m in!
Metabolism … slowing … down … as I get … older.
Blogging doesn’t help much either.
It’ll be good to shed an extra pound or two.
I’m down. I have some weight I need to get rid of BADLY.
Yeah, I’m in too. It’s beginning to show I’m behind the computer 23 hours a day.
Ill start by throwing up my lunch tomorrow.
I’m very much interested, it’s funny that I have started 10 days ago, but at least I have a better motive now to be with you in the contest.
Maybe we can share some ideas about our way of dieting too, as a start check The Hacker’s Diet I really enjoyed reading it.
I’m in as well. I gained about 20 pounds over the last 5 months while down for the count with mononucleosis. I remember joking about the “kissing disease” back in middle school, but man, I had no idea it hit so hard.
So not only am I starting to freelance web design, I’m adding in losing 40 pounds (target: 200 pounds) too. The mono must have messed with my head more than I thought.
I’ll join. I’m not so sure I’ll change my diet so much as just move around more and sweat now that it’s summer.
Add me in on that. I’m up for the next step on my trip to a healthier lifestyle. This is a great idea, thanks for inviting everyone to join in.
Hey! You can use my real name, Ana Guerrero.

Bonita is my nick at my blog.
Thanks!
Man, no diet for me. I need some weight gain! How about a transplant?
I lost over 20 pounds since March, but the last two weeks, I have gone off it. This will motivate me to start up again! I have about 30 to go!
Sign me up!
I am definately in on this. I have several failed attempts at loosing weight. Perhaps a group effort can motivate me =)
I’m in!
I’d love to join you guys! sign me up!
Some one should try this:
I’m definitely in, being trying for a while though (see site), maybe this will give me a double kick in the arse.
Sign me up, I’ve got quite a few extra pounds to shed.
Cool idea for motivation.
Wow… my thoughts on the matter. Thanks for the opportunity to loose weight with others. I’ve got 30lbs to lose that were put on in four monthes. I am glad the summer is here.
Good luck to everyone!
I desire to lose weight and gain some physical fitness. And no better time to get started than now,
As as a matter of fact, I just purchased a domain I intend to use as my fitness journal, fitnesslair.com. So joining “uber geeks” in this challenge may help motivate me to build my site quickly.
Count me in.
I want to be in on this! I need some motivation since I am stalled!
Wow I think we can file this under wildly successful, look how many people are up for it!
Good luck everyone, i’ll be watching from the stands
.
sure!! I’m in.
Cute idea! Anyone who reads my blog knows I’m well-versed in the weight struggle. I’d join up, but my case is a bit different I suppose. I just don’t do diets anymore. I do a food plan and fitness for stress management. Much more effective approach for me. Plus I’ve ran more variations of ‘diet’ blogs than you can shake a stick at, hehe. I’ll pass, but I wish you all health & success.
Add me to the list. Although, I won’t be trying to lose wait, I’ll be trying to gain. No matter what I try – protein shakes, eating binges, weight time, etc – the pounds don’t stick. I’ve been stuck at a 178lb mark (6’2″) for the past four years. I think an extra 10-15 would do a body good.
Colin, you can add [and her Hubby] next to my name.
When I told my husband about it, he was down to accompany on my quest! LOL
We went to weigh in and jogged two miles today.
Definitely pumped man!
Count me in – Im at the same start as you, 225. Lets go!
This might help provide just enough motivation to finally lose a few pounds. Let’s give it a shout and see what happens.
Count me in for the weight-loss extravaganza! My goal is to lose 25lbs before my 10-year high-school reunion in October.
Coincidentally enough, I started my diet today without knowledge of this contest. It’tl only help me motivate myself. I’m in!
Ok, This is just the motivation I need. When I first turned 30 I noticed a major increase in my wieght. I gained 30 pounds over last year. Most can not tell, but when you go to put on your clothes and they don’t even come close to fitting, that is a definite indicator you have gained some weight. I have since then lost about 15 pounds. but I would love to get about another 10 off, or at least get in shape. I can’t walk up my stairs without having an asthma attack.
You know I’m in. I just figured I’d say it again.
I’ll join, I’m already down 10-15 pounds!!!
Well, I’ve already got the weightloss journal setup….now I just gotta join you all in this so that I can stay pretty accountable to SOMEONE.
I got the pass to the gym as well…I’m ready to go! hehe.
Count me in too.
please add me to the list of people tired of watching their midline grow ever larger.
It seems that the only thing I have to lose is weight. I would like to partake in turning back the damage the fat stick has done to me. I would like to join in on the dieting fun!
Hi..I am visiting from Ana’s blog..I would love to sign up & eat right
I just opened up a blog..http://smallerservings.blogspot.com/ and my name is Margaret Hernandez
Yeah I need to lose some weight. Count me in!
add me up. http://fallfarewell.wordpress.com
use the name i commented as.
weigh me in! im way over the chunker line! add me!
Please add me too. This is just the push I need to get ready for summer.
Hi,
My name is Ariana but I prefer to use my screen name if you please. You have a nice and interesting blog site. I am not overweight by all means, only slightly bulky. I want to loose 10 – 15 lbs. I do not have a goal date. I think I would enjoy the support and watching others reach their goals too.
Just started a low-carb diet on Monday. Pretty much like Atkins for the induction, and I’ll probably stay on that for a while to get my blood sugar under control. With DM Type II running in our family I figured it’s best to get it in check now.
Ideally I’d like to lost about 70 pounds, but I’d be happy with 40, which will put me back in a size 8 and get me to my pre-wedding shape
.
Time to get serious. Please sign me up. PS, fitday is pretty cool!
I hate doing diets!
Hey, I’ve been doing something pretty similiar to this. Sign me up because I need all the motivation! I actually weigh in every day and then do a weekly average.
This will definitely be motivating! Now to find someone to use the camera for me – I’m terrible at self posing…
Ack! Colin caught me doing ice cream on day 1!!! Ok, ok, Ive made up for it… I hope.
Back on track!
I’m bout that…this is going to suck.
Alright, sign me up then.
I’m maid of honor at my friend’s wedding in October and must go down a dress size to fit in the beautiful dresses/ not look like a whale in front of everyone! Count me in.
Bravo!for your brilliand idea
“Group loosing contest” is a very good way overweight people help each other in order to loose wait.
I use to do this whith my parents, well at least it helped them and i hope that now it is time for me to try seriously to loose weight, and help and motivate all the others here to do so,as i will be helped too.
Sourdos-Greece
I will join in on this one – I have been steadily knocking the pounds off for 8 Months (64lb gone so far) and now I am into the final stretch before a Holiday at the end of June.
Actual weight loss blog is located at http://www.mcroston.co.uk/blogger
Mark
YEah, I’m in. As a climber who now weighs over 300 lbs., something has to be done and I have to be the one to do it.
How?
I’m going to start planning my meals for three days in advance AND I’M GOING TO PHOTOGRAPH EVERYTHING I EAT, WHICH I WILL POST ON A XANGA BLOG SITE. It’s nice over there. I’m going to try the same thing with exercise sessions, showing me getting to the gym, etc.
An actual eating plan?
Chicken. Chicken, chicken and chicken, with turkey when I get bored. I’ll be pretty liberal with sauces and marinades (liberal in choices, not amounts-I’m not just gonna cook a pound of buitter and call it a sauce…). Basically, it’s a simplified Atkins plan. In restaurants, I’ll stick to salads.
Big problems will be going out for Thai after climbing or on weekends; I’ll have to plan ahead, no side dishes.
My goal? My ultimate goal? 240. Wow. 240; less than I weighed in college.
My goals this week:
a. eliminate bread, crackers and chips
I’m in! This is the inspiration I need to get back to my goal weight. I also want to clean up my eating habits and make better food choices. I don’t have much to lose, but my goal includes maintaining my new weight for good. Thanks Colin (and everyone else participating). I’m cheering you on.
I’ve got my own “diet” log at http://www.sixpackbysummer.com. I really love the idea of a social diet. Acutally, isn’t that what Jenny Craig, Weight watchers, etc etc really do? Social!
Diet 2.0
I’m in. I’ve been doing my own diety thing for a week or so already, but I cant resist the web 2.0ishness of this!
Hi – I found your site through Lifehacker. Count me in – I need to be in better shape for my wedding.
Add me to the list!
http://199lbs.blogspot.com/
and i’m making a flckr account now. (i know, shame on me. but i’ve got facebook!)
Sounds interesting Colin … add me to your list please with the above URL .. I will be updating this with my own progress over the summer .. I’m on/was on Weight Watchers .. still count points but don’t go to meetings or anything like that anymore – it’s week 54 now – and I’m hovering around same mark. This could be good!
Good luck to everybody.
I have been at this dieting for several months, but would love to join this group. Unlike those of you with a few extra pounds, I am clearly severely obese. My short term goal is to lose 40 pounds in the next 16 weeks and eventually to lose 75 pounds by years end.
Oh, add me! I’ve been trying to loose weight for almost 4 months now and I’m not getting anywhere… lacking motivation mostly…
Hi, please add me to the group! Time to get rid of the post-wedding-can-finally-stop-dieting weight
Oh, I’m in too! I can do it one more time!
I like this idea a lot. I’ve been struggling to lose the 25 pounds I’ve put on in the past two years. It’s not THAT big a deal… 165 to 140… but I’ve decided to finally shed it in 8 weeks for a “pool party” type wedding I’m attending. Good luck to everyone on their goals.
I’d love to be listed! I started keeping track back in February and it’s helped a lot. I’m not all that comfortable releasing my current weight but I have been posting the bi-weekly results from my weigh-ins with the doctor.
i’m all for gettin in shape. my current weight is 205. i want to be at 185, like 2 months ago. and i wanna get a macbook too, and i want to meet maynard. i suppose one of those three will do.
This is a great idea. Count me in.
I’ve started a blog (long overdue) to help track my progress.
My blog can be found at http://www.joeperrin.com/blog
Good luck with your goals!
Joe.
Shortly after Christmas my doctor prescribed Mirtazapine, an antidepresant. At the time my weight was somewhere between 9 – 9.5 stone (130ish pounds) – I was underweight for my height (5’11). Like many other people, Mirtazapine caused my metabolism to slow and I gained 2stone (20% of my original weight). The drugs did work and I feel much better, but now want to have a healthy lifestyle and fight my depression and anxiety naturally.
Last Wednesday (1st June 2006) I embarked on my new health plan. I no longer smoke or take Mirtazapine, I eat at least 5 portions of fruit/Veg a day, do some form of daily exercise (usually tennis or cycling – but on Saturday I went punting!), drink 2litres of water a day (and no fizzy pop), and take daily vitamins. I also record my success on a chart each day which includes the amount of studying I have done and the amount of sleep I get.
My goal is to weigh 9.5 stone (133pounds).
I need help on dimishing the mass of this planet
I think this will be a good motivator for me. I’ve been struggling with weight issues since I was a kid and I haven’t been able to keep the weight I lose off. Maybe this will help me do that. Count me in.
I just came across this site, add me to the list. I actually started April 10th when I was tired of carrying around 225-230 lbs. As of yesterday morning June 12th I was at 201. Looking for a target of 175-180. With a short term goal of hitting 190 by early-mid July.
Do you have “The Diet” running again this year?
I stumbled across The Diet while on flickr and it sounds like a good source of motivation. I do have a mostly dormant blog where I can post updates, but I might wind up posting updates on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/wallyhartshorn/. Maybe I’ll create a set and post weekly photos of myself on weigh-in day. We’ll see.
I’m 6’1″ and in the neighborhood of 265. I’d like to be down below 190. We’ll see.
Jeff Pulice…. well that sounds like a wounderful plan, but you did then again post this about a year ago or so. but i haven’t heard about your weight loss yet….whats going on? if your plan does work then i would like to see it even the wounderfull pictures of you going the YMCA. well i guess we will be see you at pinks big guy and soon to be small guy. actually i am hoping you do loss weight for health reasons. and i would want my children to meet you and all that jazzy stuff.
Hi Colin,
I recently discovered your “The-Diet” page and have decided to join in!
Here is my information:
Name: David Meade
Blog: http://www.davidmeade.com

Thanks for the inspiration,
– Dave
David: Great work, I hope to see your progress!
Thanks, Colin!
(I hope to see it too!
Hey Colin,
Like David I found the page a short while ago. I guess this is relatively good timing, as tomorrow is Tuesday.
This is my blog- http://zombrain.blogspot.com/
I’m in it for the long haul!
Looks like I am insanely late to the party, but this coincides perfectly with my goal to lose 30 pounds before the end of the year. Count me in – I’ll start doing weekly weigh-ins this week
